Michael Broberg Palmgren

Michael Broberg Palmgren (Denmark) serves as vice president of EASAC from 2023-2025. He is professor of plant physiology at the Department of Plant and Environmental Sciences, University of Copenhagen. After obtaining his PhD in plant biochemistry at Lund University, Sweden, in 1990, he obtained an EMBO Long-Term Fellowship to carry out a postdoctoral stay at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) in Heidelberg. In 1993 he became assistant professor at the Royal Veterinary and Agricultural University in Denmark, and in 1995 associate professor at the University of Copenhagen, where his research focused on regulation of primary active transport of ions across plant membranes. In 1998 he was appointed full professor.  From 2007 to 2012 (since 2009 chair) he was member of the Danish Natural Science Research Council. His laboratory has recently become interested in accelerating breeding of orphan crops and wild plants for a future agriculture that is sustainable and climate-friendly. Instead of investigating how to make our current crops more robust, the research addresses how to transform underutilized plants that are already resilient into new crops.
