Dr Thomas Cole-Hunter
Biosciences and Public Health Programme Director
Thomas (Tom) Cole-Hunter is an environmental epidemiologist whose work focuses on air pollution, noise, greenness, and physical activity, with an emphasis on exposure assessment and health impact analysis. His research aims to translate evidence into healthier urban environments and more effective public policy.
He has held research and policy positions across Europe, Australia, and the United States. Before joining EASAC, he was Assistant Professor at the University of Copenhagen (2023–2025), leading teaching and research on environmental health, at the Department of Public Health. He has experience consulting at UNICEF’s Supply Division (2025-2026), supporting global procurement for assisting a lead-free future, and WHO’s Asia-Pacific Centre for Environment and Health (2020-2022), supporting regional health impact assessments informing air quality policy. He has also held fellowships with the Centre for Air pollution, energy and health Research (Sydney), Colorado State University (NIH SToVES project, USA), and ISGlobal in Barcelona, where he helped coordinate major EU projects (CITI-SENSE, TAPAS, PASTA). He earned his PhD at Queensland University of Technology, Australia.
Dr Cole-Hunter has secured several competitive awards, including the Walter A. Rosenblith New Investigator Award from the Health Effects Institute (2021) and a National Health and Medical Research Council Postdoctoral Fellowship (2018–2020). As of this writing, he has authored over 90 peer-reviewed publications, cited more than 6,100 times (H-index 40, Google Scholar).
