
Catarina Resende de Oliveira
Catarina Resende de Oliveira, MD PhD, (Portugal) is Full Professor (Professor Emeritus) at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Coimbra. She was consultant of neurology at Coimbra University Hospital, and president of the Centre for Neuroscience and Cell Biology (CNC) from 2003 to 2013. Presently she is member of the Centre for Innovative Biomedicine and Biotechnology (CIBB), at the University of Coimbra.
Catarina Resende Oliveira held several management positions, participated and chaired several committees at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Coimbra, having been involved in the curricular reforms of this Medical School and participated in the pedagogical projects developed by the school in collaboration with the Universities of the Azores and Cabo Verde. Her research interests are focused on the cellular and molecular mechanisms of neurodegeneration and the identification of neurodegenerative diseases biomarkers (Alzheimer’s and Prion diseases). She published over 300 research papers, (h-index of 80; >23000 citations) in high impact journals, such as, New England Journal of Medicine, Lancet Neurology and JAMA.
She has a vast experience in organization and leadership of research, and she has been reviewer for FCT, Welcome Trust, Alzheimer's Association, Parkinson’s UK, Medical Research Council, and European Research Council (ERC). She was a member of the Health Sciences Scientific Council of FCT and EDAB, and was sub-director of the Portugal HMS Programme, as well as member of the direction of Health Cluster Portugal (HCP).
She received several awards and distinctions, including the Ordem da Instrução Publica – Grande Oficial, awarded by the Presidency of the Portuguese Republic, the Medal of Distinct Services (Gold) from the Ministry of Health of Portugal and the “Albert Struyvenberg Medal 2022” from the European Society of Clinical Research. In 2024 she received “Prémio Ciência” awarded by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT).
Catarina Resende de Oliveira was Coordinator of the Unit for Innovation and Development (UID) at the Centro Hospitalar e Universitário de Coimbra (CHUC) and member of the board of directors of the Centro Académico Clínico de Coimbra (CACC). She was the first president of the National Agency for Clinical Research and Biomedical Innovation (AICIB), from 2020 to 2024.
