
Hannes Lohi
Hannes Lohi (Finland) is Professor of Molecular Genetics at the University of Helsinki and Director of the One Health Doctoral Programme. He serves on the Management Group of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and is a group leader at the Folkhälsan Research Center, an internationally recognised institution in biomedical and health science research with dedicated programmes in genetics and public health. An internationally leading expert in comparative genomics, his research has advanced the understanding of the genetic mechanisms of diseases across species, driving innovations at the interface of human, animal, and environmental health within the One Health framework.
Professor Lohi has a distinguished track record in scientific leadership, international collaboration, and strategic research development, contributing to expert advisory activities and shaping interdisciplinary initiatives. He is a recipient of a European Research Council Starting Grant (ERC StG, 2010) and has successfully translated scientific discoveries into impact by founding several high-performing startups in the health and biotechnology sectors.
He is an invited member of the Finnish Society of Sciences and Letters (2019) and the Finnish Academy of Science and Letters (2022). His work is characterised by a strong commitment to bridging science and policy, strengthening the role of life sciences in addressing global health challenges, and advancing the visibility and impact of the One Health approach.
