Dan Bălteanu
Dan Bălteanu (Romania) is a graduate of the Faculty of Geology and Geography of the University of Bucharest, Department of Geography, and he holds a PhD degree in Geography (1979). He continued his training in Environmental Geography and Dynamic Geomorphology at the Institute of Geography in Krakow and at Uppsala University. He completed Postdoc research internships at the University of Colorado, Boulder (Colorado) and Washington University (Seattle) on a Fulbright Grant, and in Leipzig, on a DAAD Grant.
His academic competences are in the field of geomorphology, environmental hazards, land use/land cover change, environmental and climate change and climate variability impacts (at local, regional and national scales). He is the author and editor of over 30 volumes, over 250 papers and 53 chapters in books published in national and international journals, many of them dealing with the impact of extreme events on society and the environment. He is the editor-in-chief of the Revue Roumaine de Géographie/Romanian Journal of Geography, and a member of several national and international editorial boards.
He is a member of the Romanian Academy, Director of the Institute of Geography, and Chair of the Future Earth – Research for Global Sustainable Development National Committee and of the Commission for the reduction of the Effects of Natural Disasters and President of the International Geographical Union (IGU) National Committee. He serves as PhD supervisor of over 30 PhD theses and was a Professor at the University of Bucharest and Visiting Professor at several universities in Italy (University of Naples Federico Secondo; University of Molise, Isernia), Austria (University of Klagenfurt), Japan (Aichi University), Israel (Beer-Sheva University), Croatia (University of Split), France (Paris Nanterre University), holding courses in Geomorphology and Environmental Change.
Prof. Dan Bălteanu has been involved in over 40 research projects and has coordinated several national and international projects (on the Romanian side): FP6, FP7, Horizon, Marie Curie, NATO, World Bank and UNEP.
He has received a number of scientific awards and honorary degrees, among which: Doctor Honoris Causa at Ștefan cel Mare University, Suceava; Valahia University, Târgoviște; Craiova University; West University, Timișoara), Profesor Honoris Causa (Babeș-Bolyai University, Cluj-Napoca), Honorary President of the Romanian Geographical Society, Honorary member of the Bulgarian Geographical Society.
