New EASAC President and Vice-Presidents assume posts

Prof. Sir Brian Heap completed his 3-year term of office as President of EASAC at the end of the Council meeting in Rome, 5-6 December 2013. The new EASAC President is Jos van der Meer, an eminent clinician and emeritus Professor of Radboud University, who has a long and distinguished career in infectious disease research and has represented the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW) in EASAC. The Rome meeting also saw the announcement of EASAC's Vice-Presidents for the coming years: Prof. J. Pálinkas (Hungarian Academy of Sciences), Prof. M. Poliakoff (Royal Society, UK), Prof. L. Christophorou (Academy of Athens, Greece) and Prof. T. Courvoisier (Swiss Academies of Arts and Sciences). The President, Vice-Presidents and immediate Past President together form the EASAC Bureau which meets quarterly to discuss ongoing EASAC business.

The new EASAC President, Professor Jos van der Meer says: "We are facing formidable challenges in Europe. Energy, food production, environment and ecology, antimicrobial resistance and other problems in health care, to mention major ones. The European citizens should benefit from what science has to offer to tackle these problems. Therefore, EASAC will continue providing independent advice to policy makers."
