EASAC Celebrates 25 Years of Science for Policy Advice
This year, the European Academies Science Advisory Council (EASAC) marks 25 years of mobilising Europe’s leading scientists to provide independent scientific advice to European policymakers on critical issues for policy and society. Since its establishment in June 2001, EASAC has served as a platform for Europe’s national science academies, working together to strengthen the connection between science and policy, striving to ensure that decisions across EU institutions are informed by rigorous scientific evidence.
Building science into policy
“We have a great challenge in front of us, building science into policy. Many key policy issues have a scientific component. The need for quick and reliable advice from credible sources is more important than ever.”
These remarks by Professor Uno Lindberg, EASAC’s inaugural chairman, were featured in a press release issued on 11 June 2001 by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences to announce the establishment of EASAC. Lindberg’s words remain as relevant today as they were back then, underscoring the enduring importance of science-based advice in a rapidly evolving policy landscape shaped by technological advancements, geopolitical shifts, and multiple socio-environmental crises.
As EASAC celebrates this milestone, it reaffirms its commitment to fostering science-policy advice and supporting evidence-informed decision-making across Europe.
