ALLEA Statement: Academic Freedom under Attack

Independent science is crucial for democracy - making society safer, healthier and more resilient.

In reaction to the most recent restrictions imposed by the U.S. Administration on the academic sector, ALLEA – The European Federation of Academies of Sciences and Humanities of Academies of Sciences and Humanities, reaffirms the importance of upholding the fundamental principles of academic freedom and institutional autonomy. EASAC President Wim van Saarloos has signed the ALLEA Statement on Threats to Academic Freedom and International Research Collaboration in the United States for EASAC.

ALLEA calls upon all scientific institutions, political decision-makers, and the public to recognise and defend the essential role of independent science in the U.S. and worldwide. Defending academic freedom is an urgent and universal responsibility, and governments should refrain from coercive actions against academic institutions, states the federation.
