Biomass Letter Cited in Wiley’s Climate Resilience and Sustainability Journal

Bioenergy, predominantly from forest biomass, remains a key component of renewable energy in the EU. Solid biofuels constitute the largest share of bioenergy. And while EU policies have evolved to address some of the sustainability concerns related to forest biomass, the myth that burning wood is always better than fossil fuels because it’s renewable is still alive.

A recent Policy Paper published in Wiley’s Climate Resilience and Sustainability Journal shows that Norton et al 2019 continues to have an influence in the controversial debate and is cited as one of the "well documented scientific critiques" of the claim that forest biomass is carbon-neutral, leading to the conclusion that "Burning Forest Biomass Is Not an Effective Climate Mitigation Response and Conflicts With Biodiversity Adaptation."
