EASAC report "Gain of Function" presented at symposium organised by the US National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine

Main messages from the EASAC report "Gain of function: experimental applications relating to potentially pandemic pathogens" were presented by Professor Volker ter Meulen, chair of the EASAC Working Group, at the Gain of Function Research Symposium organised by the US National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine in Washington DC March 10-11. This meeting provided a mechanism to engage the life sciences community and the broader public in discussing the issues associated with characterising and managing Gain of Function research.

The EASAC contribution was considered to be particularly helpful in emphasising the international aspects of the deliberations and in showing how multiple academies and countries can work together to clarify principles, share good practice, and inform public policy development. Together with the EASAC outputs, the conclusions from the US deliberative process can now serve as a significant resource for further, global, discussion and action relating to Gain of Function research policy and practice.
