The researcher will support EASAC’s Working Group on Water Scarcity and Retention in European Landscapes, a major independent scientific assessment aimed at informing EU water and climate adaptation policy.

Your tasks

You will conduct a structured review of recent (2015-2026) science-policy literature and current EU regulatory frameworks related to water scarcity, water retention, and landscape management. The focus will be on identifying areas where robust scientific evidence exists but policy has not yet caught up. You will produce a synthesis document for use by the Working Group in drafting its report.

Alongside the literature work, you will help build and maintain relationships between the Working Group and key stakeholders, including the European Water Association, Water Europe, the European Water Academy, and the Water Resilience Stakeholder Platform.

We are looking for someone with

  • A PhD awarded within the last five years in a relevant field (e.g., hydrology, water resources, environmental science, ecology, earth system science, or a related discipline).
  • Proven ability to synthesize scientific literature and communicate findings clearly to non-specialist audiences.
  • Experience at the European science-policy interface – either in advisory, consultancy, or policy engagement roles – is a strong merit.
  • Excellent written English and the ability to work independently under tight deadlines.
  • Residency and the right to work in the EU.

What we offer

  • A unique opportunity to contribute to a high-profile and independent European science advisory process.
  • Direct engagement with a multidisciplinary working group of leading European scientists.
  • A gross salary of €5,000/month for a 3-month freelance contract (ideally starting on 1 January 2027).
  • Flexible working arrangements; the role can be performed remotely.

To apply or for further information, please contact the EASAC Environment Programme Director, Prof. Thomas Elmqvist.

Please send a CV and a brief cover letter (max. one page) indicating your relevant experience by 10 November 2026 at the latest.
